The Modern House

Over the last few years we have been involved in the phased restoration of this 60s detached house in Strawberry Hill. Originally designed by an architect for his family and sold for the first time to the current owners, we gave the property a sensitive, modern update for the young family to make it their own.

The house is unique to the area, being detached and set back in a secluded spot behind the main terrace of houses. The original house had plenty of its own character, which our clients (and ourselves) were very keen to retain. We achieved this through modest and carefully considered extensions and interior design that is a nod to the original property and its age.

We replaced a dilapidated, leaking sunroom to the front of the house with a new brick built extension and infilled a unkempt alleyway space to the side of the property with a new glass roofed extension. The sunroom space was transformed from a storage space with limited use into a guest room/ home office with ensuite. The glass roof infill extension totally transformed the ground floor family space and created the opportunity to build the very bespoke handmade plywood kitchen and matching surrounding joinery we designed in full detail (including a kitchen island with a dramatic cantilever worktop!).

We were careful to retain and repair character features such as the exposed timber ceiling and floors, exposed cream bricks used internally and externally and the existing windows were replaced throughout with a close match (with a few more subtly added) to maintain the feel of the house being surrounded by and open to the garden on three sides.

We carefully added to the existing staircase by designing a wall of timber fins against the staircase spanning full height from the ground floor up through to the ceiling of the first floor.

The bathrooms were a nod to the 60s design style with simple forms and bold, colourful geometric statement tiles.
