The Black Brick Extension

A modest extension has made a big difference this family home in Twickenham. With the internal ground floor layout remaining largely unchanged (retaining the existing kitchen location) this family space was added to the rear to give a bright and beautiful room that connects to a modern garden.

The unusual form (part flat, part pitched in an effort to reduce height on the boundary on one side whilst to maximise on other) creates a unique extension design architecturally but also forms an unexpected and spacious feeling internal space. The black features (black brick and mortar, architectural details, painted joists) add to create a bold and pulled together scheme.

The plan also retains a ‘lightwell’ in the middle of the plan, to retain dual aspect (and plenty of light) into both the existing ground floor space and the new extension. A new garden wall was built in bricks to match the extension laid in ‘hit and miss’ pattern to let light through and feel less enclosed.

Pale tiles which pass through in the extension and externally give the illusion of a larger space and are a wonderful contrast to the black brick walls.
